Reflections on the SCSI/DIT Honours Degree in Property Studies

I have just completed the final year of the SCSI/DIT BSc in Property Studies Degree course and am now writing my dissertation, so by the end of this year, I’ll have completed the course and I’m in a stronger position professionally as a result.

The course is challenging (as an honours degree should be) but it’s not insurmountable! None of the sections were irrelevant, and all were good use of time, which is what you need to know when you’re dedicating your Saturdays and personal time to something. That said, the weekends flew by and there were no big surprises along the way – the coursework was pretty well spread out, and we had access to all of Bolton St and SCSI resources. The lecturers were also very engaging and helpful.

I was able to apply content of the course to my work in property very quickly as well as being able to develop parts of the business. There was a very strong focus on valuations and law, which are both crucial to any estate agency now, such is the pace of change. The course also serves as an opportunity to refresh on day to day aspects like the Red Book and Landlord &Tenant law.

The course was definitely worthwhile, not only from a practical perspective, but also for learning about other ways to approach things, and getting exposure to property issues which we don’t deal with day to day, but need to have a handle on, nonetheless. It was also a great opportunity to meet other estate agents and learn from them.
